Redesign

Just a quick note to everyone that I am planning on launching my redesign tomorrow at some point. Some things are defintely going to need some clean up after launch, but I just feel like it is at a point where small things shouldn’t hold it up. So if something looks broken, I will be fixing it soon.

Weekly Link Round-Up #59

Nice, 2 days off this week, so hopefully I will be able to get my redesign finished up. Here are a few interesting links from this past week: Four resources to consider when starting a project Cameron gives a nice list of resources to use before starting a project: Precedent: Who’s done it already and how? External data. Internal data & knowledge. Educated guesses. Sign in, register, join? Th…

Unobtrusive JavaScript Print Link (with jQuery)

There are times when I have to implement designs that have print links on them. While I may think they are useless, I still have to make them work as they are a part of an approved comp. Sure, it is easy to have a link and then add an onclick event to launch the print window, but is that the right thing to do? Clicking a JavaScript print link does nothing more than launch the browser’s print wind…

Weekly Link Round-Up #58

Man, it’s tough to get work done on my own site when I am so busy with freelance work. Slowly but surely, I am making progress, and I am hoping that by having some days off this month, I will be able to get it done soon. Here are the links that I found interesting this week: Cholesterol. I think having debate in the workplace is so important to reaching the best decision. This is why I think Obam…

Weekly Link Round-Up #57

We need to have 4 day weekends more often. I got so much work done on my redesign. I’m currently in the process of dealing with IE6, then I am going to start creating the theme. So there is a possibility that I will have something launched sometime this week. Just a few interesting items from this past week: Questionable Characters I found this site so amusing. The premise is that you ask a quest…

My 2008 Web Thanksgiving List

Happy Thanksgiving to all! I thought I would take this opportunity to say what I am thankful for on the web. I am thankful for: Jeffrey Zeldman and Eric Meyer (and others) They really helped to spearhead the Web Standards movement, and without them, I probably wouldn’t be in the field today. Bulletproof Web Design This is one of the first web development books I had ever read, and it definitely…

Weekly Link Round-Up #56

I’m really looking forward to this Thanksgiving break. I’ve been working on some blog articles and the redesign of my site. So stay tuned, changes are coming soon hopefully. Here is what I found interesting this week: A List Apart: Issue 272 Two solid articles from A List Apart again, but I thought This is How the Web Gets Regulated was especially interesting. There are definitely holes in web ac…

Weekly Link Round-Up #55

Just another busy week and some interesting links from the week: Writing good alt text Roger Johansson provides some instructions for writing good alt text. 100% CSS compatibility or degrade correctly? In my opinion, the correct answer is to degrade correctly. The only problem is trying to sell the client on that idea. Why thinking in the shower may be an ideal model for “creative pause” I defi…

How to Preload Images When You Can’t Use CSS Sprites

I have already shown how to use css sprites, but there are times when you just cannot use them. Sometimes you still want the benefit of preloading the image, so you have to get creative. An Example I have created a demo of a CSS sprite in action. The sprite has the two images sitting on top of each other, and each link is using the image as a background image and then shifting the position of it w…

Weekly Link Round-Up #54

Well, unfortunately I’m still doing weekly link round-ups. That means that my redesign still isn’t finished. Hopefully I will have more time to finish it up soon. Here are the links that I found interesting this past week: QUESTION: In the past, historic front-page moments This is a great question considering the historic moment we had last week. We had people lining up for hours to buy newspaper…
